Display Energy Certificates (DEC’s) have been in existence since 2008. It is mandatory for all publicly funded buildings that arevisited by the public and have a floor area greater than 250m2 to display a valid certificate.
A DEC compares your buildings energy consumption to the consumption of a building of similar size and use. This is called the Benchmark Building. You are compared against the Benchmark Building on a scale of 1 to 150 , segmented in to A-G ratings. The rating you achieve is termed your ‘Operational Rating (OR)’. An Operational Rating (OR) is a measure of the annual (CO2) emission per unit of area of the building caused by its consumption of energy. If by comparison, you produce less CO2 per unit of floor area than the Benchmark Building, you are rated below 100. If you produce more, you are rated above 100.
DEC’s are a visual incentive to encourage occupiers to reduce their energy consumption year on year. To help achieve this, each certificate is accompanied by an Advisory Report, which provides cost effective and relevant energy saving opportunities.
We have put together a poster that helps explain what the purpose of DEC’s. It provides more detail of what information is contained in a DEC and Advisory report and how to put that information to best use. Please click this link to download.
